Adventures in Homebuying

Hi! I’m Ashley Robb and welcome to Adventures in Homebuying! This is a new section to our blog dedicated to my experience as a first time homebuyer. Let me start by giving you a bit of my background. I came to work with Marketing Results, Morris & Raper Realtor’s in-house ad agency, in 1999. I was still in college, and was hired as an intern. I would also work on-site at different communities on the weekends, or whenever I was needed. After I graduated, I continued on and am now a Marketing Manager. I work with our builders to help with all marketing efforts for their new home communities.
Don’t worry, even though I have worked in the real estate industry for years, I was (and still am) quite intimidated by the homebuying process. I am hoping that by sharing my experience, I can show that even in today’s market, there are great opportunities for all buyers.
I have always wanted to own a home. When I was single, I wanted a trendy condo in Midtown. Now that I am married, I want a nice single family home, with a big yard for my dogs (and one day, my kids) to play. I always thought that my husband and I had too much debt to be able to qualify for anything worth buying. I was sitting in a meeting with a lender, listening to her talk about helping people with low credit scores qualify for a home, and had a thought…if they can qualify, why can’t we? I called her the next day.
In talking with her, I gave her my specific circumstances and had her run our credit. I told her my price range I was thinking of, the monthly payment I wanted to stay within, and held my breath. Her response, “we will have no problem qualifying you for that amount.” And so my adventures in homebuying begin…
