Adventures in Househunting – The Closing

With the keys to our first home!

Well, my adventure has come to an end. We closed on our first home on Friday! What an adventure it has been. Our closing was set for Thursday, and our loan processor even had us at the closing attorney’s office that afternoon. After many phone calls, I found out that they were missing one  piece of paper. And no one bothered to tell me until 4.30 that afternoon, when we all were at the closing.

So, we started again the next day. A few of the repairs that we asked the homeowner to complete were not done, so he wrote a check to a contractor we trust, and I will handle getting those completed. The last few days leading to the closing were extremely stressful, and unfortunately, our loan processor did not communicate with us as well as I would have liked. We stopped to get our certified check on the way to the closing, since we only found out that afternoon the amount we needed. Also, she was extremely off on the total funds we would need. We were asked to bring a check for one amount, and was told that we would be getting approximately $1300 back. In all actuality, I had to write a check for an additional $100. That $1400 is a big difference to me, but the house is completely worth it.

My advice to all you other first time homebuyers is to to be prepared for hiccups to come up. Nothing went as smoothly as I would have liked last week, but in the end, we got an amazing deal on a beautiful home. After moving in the rain, we are getting settled, and love having this home to call our own.
